Harrison and B. Waters, Burne-Jones, 1973. Burne-Jones conceived the design in 1871, and in the following year, listed it among "four subject which above all others i desire to paint, and count my chief designs for some ears to come." However, other work intervened and he was not able to return to the project until 1881. the picture in the Victoria and Albert Museum was not started until 1881 and although worked on in 1895-6, was still unfinished at the artist's death in 1898. This drawing probably dates from the mid-1890s, when Burne-Jones was fond of using the technique of black and white chalk on terracotta paper. Christie's English Watercolours and Drawings 27.10.87
