Museum number 1857,1220.272 Title Series: The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus Series: The Chariot Frieze Acquisition name From: Sir Charles Thomas Newton Acquisition date 1857 Fragment of Chariot marble frieze showing the body of a chariot with the lower part of the charioteer's dress. Most of the body of the chariot is preserved, including parts of the breastwork and the side rails, as well as the hub, parts of two spokes, and rather over a quarter of the rim of the wheel. There is a drill-hole in the centre of the hub, and below it a rectangular cutting for the attachment of the lower part of the wheel. The charioteer's dress is visible behind and through the wheel, its swirling lines rendered by deep cuts with free use of the drill. Near the rail is what appears to be the ned of the right trace-horse's tail. Extensive traces of red paint survive on the front of the chariot, fainter traces below.(1857.12-20.272b) The head and torso of a charioteer, preserved from almost down to the knees, but with both arms missing. The charioteer wears a long dress girt at the waist, which perhaps left the right knee bare. The hair has been badly abraded on the right side of the head and the nose is missing, but otherwise is the best preserved head from the Chariot frieze. It is carved in high relief, but the left side of the face is treated rather summarily, with the eye merging into the background. The right arm was carved in the round.
