Previously mis-identified as Study of the Head and Shoulders of a Young Man for the King in The Wheel of Fortune
Monochrome oil study of the uppermost maiden, cut off by the edge of the painting upper left, at the top of The Golden Stairs. The model appears three times amongst the first six of the figures. A studio production under the supervision of the master. This supposition is put forward on the basis that Burne-Jones made a detailed pencil drawing which was then handed over to an assistant who was preparing the under-painting for the final work. This painting was therefore transitional between study and the finished work, with Burne-Jones adding touches, notably the whites of the eyes
