Songs of the North gathered together by a collection of ballads from the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland by A C Macleod & Harold Boulton published around 1885. This little known commission would have appealed to Burne-Jones as he had been interested in Border Ballads from a very early date, Georgiana often sang them at the piano and the artist took their subjects to illustrate amongst which Clerk Saunders is one such example along with two others in the Little Holland House Album. The book is filled with accompanying illustrations by Whistler, Albert Moore, Noel Paton, Charles Keene, Cecil Lawson, and many other well artists and illustrators. The book is dedicated to the Queen suggesting that it was a charitable production.
