This figure, specially designed by BJ, is documented in his A/c Bk entries: (i) 1875: 'S. Helena. Mr. Newman's window in small, not including touching up - nor will any small design include touching up. £6'; and (ii) dated June 1876: 'Redrawing head on large photograph of S. Helena £1'. This is an interesting example of the documented use of photographs as a means of producing full-size cartoons from small drawings. Marillier's note adds that Mr Newman was 'related to the Gallands' (see WELTON, Yorks). According to Mr. Colin Franklin, the glass was at Cotterstock Lodge, near Oundle. Windows commemorating Edward, Maria and Denis Newman are at Elton, Hunts, not far from Cotterstock Lodge.
St Helena BJ 262 (Sewter dates it as 1899) Described by Sewter as ‘holding a long Tau-cross’, the cartoon has only two entries in his index – 1875/6 Mr Newman (Denis, Edward and Maria Newman ) and Leek All Saints 1902. The figure was specially designed by Burne-Jones, whose account book documented the use of photography in producing the full size cartoon from a small drawing. The glass was apparently installed at Cotterstock Lodge near Oundle, and windows commemorating the Newmans are in nearby Elton Church.
