Burne-Jones painted the figure of Danaë in 1863 which is said to have been destroyed in a fire at the frame-makers soon after completion. The design is now known only from the present drawing no. 42 and a slight sketch with colour notes in the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.2870-1927).
