A maiden lying on a couch, listening to the strains of a zither played by a waiting woman; at the window appears Love bearing a letter sealed with a heart
Fitzwilliam Work list 1863 St. Valentine's Day belonging to Street. Arthur Hughes's painting The Eve of St Agnes, was on exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1856, the year Burne-Jones was staying in London with his Aunt ( Memorials Vol 1 p 131) and as Hughes was also a member of the Hogarth Club from 1858, it is likely that Burne-Jones knew of the studies for the painting which may have been exhibited there. In addition Hughes's painting appears to have been purchased by T E Plint who also bought from Burne-Jones and he may have possibly seen the painting again through that connection. Current location unknown, possibly destroyed in the fire that Street's house in Bath suffered during the Second World War.
