S Gimingnano - only one design seems quite impetuous the Fall of Sodom namely, a quite glorious picture , his pictures are only everywhere good, 7 careful and finished any other work in Italy make him ......ing(?) to be forgotton This time artistic excellence had little charm for me for some reasoon so that I never wanted to look at Titian, and saw the Raphaels at Rome for the first time as unaffected by them as I can see the carton in London but Giotto at S Croce and Botticelli everywhere and Orcagna in the inferno at S Maria Novello and Luca Signorelli at Orvieto & Michael Angelo always and the Green Cloister in Florence ........ full of the inspiration I went to look for. The Green Cloister is unequal - if he painted all - he often grew tired but nothing in Italy looks more like inspiration - the figures are fine (few)? - the drapery beautiful, the intention (inclination?) of head and expression perfect everywhere the heart of the subject is got at once, in an unforgettable way - in the deluge, the most finished by far, in some ways the best is in some ways the worst - the storm and incidents of drowning men amuse him away from the heart of the story a little - but the making of Adam is not less (except of course for obvious reasons) than the same subject of Michael Angelo - & the 3 angels supping with Abraham - & Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt are types of imaginative story telling The chapel painted by Orcagna. The Inferno as usual the most interesting. I thought this perfectly glorious the design of the figures has no sign of imm........ting but is full of spirit and freedom - towards the top a great wind seems to drift over
