1871 Sep -Oct This was a journey of 3 weeks in Italy - from Thursday at Genoa to Thursday three weeks at Mentone Saw Genoa - & Florence & Pisa for the second time - & San Gemignano Orvieto Rome Assisi Perugia and Arezzo for the first time And these roads by carriage for the first time from Serta(?) to Spezzia - from Orvieto to Orte - from Assisi to Perugia - and from Savona to Mentone. This time I added to the painters I most came for Paulo Uccello. Orcagna Piero Della Francesca as at the time I came for more for Michael Angelo. Luca Signorelli. Mantegna. Orcagna. Giotto. Botticelli. Andrea del Sarto. Paolo Uccello. Piero della Framcesca and at Perugia more than ever - and at Florence Fra Angelico - but I care less for Benozzo Gozzoli and Ghrlandio than I did in my first journey - and was unlucky in not seeing Lippo Lippi at Prato . Cities I care most for Orvieto and Assisi but Rome disappointed me - of buildings ... the most for The Duomo & Campanile & Baptistry I thought more beautiful Than any other place I had seen, & beyond my remembrance of them - S Miniato is ruined by (?) the heights there by abominations but Fiesole remains perfect In Pisa the Campo Santo is more ruined than I thought by time though, nothing has been restored - the Triumph of Death is impressive only in design.... for the colour is so perished that it is even dis...guable - I feel certain now that Orcagna did no(t) paint it - it has less design than most ancient pictures, & Orcagna is beyond most men in design - the right corner of the people in the garden is less good than many a book picture - only the kings are quite good and carry one away - the Giottos are all but obliterated. The early history by Pieto Aretino is ruined - the Benozzo Gozzolis are best - but his uniform excellence is tiresome both here and at
