Burne-Jones's first treatment of the Merlin and Nimue story was in 1857, when he used the subject in his part of the mural decoration of the Oxford Union. In 1861 and 1872 he returned to the subject (these versions are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Lady Lever Art Gallery) and finally in 1884, later in life, he produced the present version.
