This fine drawing is in black charcoal and ink on rich brown paper. The girl's dress is inspired by the drapery on Greek and Roman statues. The figure is unnaturally tall, like the figures in most of Edward Burne-Jones' paintings. The extra height is balanced by the wide knot of drapery around the knee. The drawing is a study for a figure carrying a sign of the zodiac in a frieze in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
Another study for this figure on brown paper is in the Victoria and Albert museum Acc. no E.2904-1927 and the cartoon is held in the Kelmscott Manor collections. A copy by Fairfax Murray, who painted the panels in the Green Dinging Room was sold through a London auction house c. 1985.
