Cortona was quite miserable and desolate not one redeeming point about that wretched town & the Signorellis here for which one came here - not of his best - none comparable to the perfect one at Perugia - but all looked early works, and were not noticeable, or in any way interesting except as his works - but the one in Perugia was a great work. Cortona is very miserable and the people look wretched and have not the lead to be clean and the look of the city is tame from the valley, any other city built on a hill looks more like the name Cortona The Iranmere Lake was perfectly beautiful and has in it 2 islands one big brown one with a .... on one .... & a little town on the other, & the smaller island ... a green one - the mountians on the other side were soft low ones - quite beautiful - the sun shone brightly on the water - it was not a blue lake like the lake of Como & the northern lakes, but was the right color of water & the most beautiful lake I ever saw bell tower on the way from Cortona to Arezzo
