Variant studies for Andromeda in The Rock of Doom and The Doom fulfilled (background study). In the very early composition study (private collection, cited by Kurt Locher 1973) the figure of Andromeda in The Doom Fulfilled is frontally placed, only later was her back turned to the viewer. The study of the wing is one of a number made for the Perseus Series, other are held in Birmingham City Art Gallery and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle. The date of 1880 is suspect because of the early and experiential nature of the poses which is why a date of 1876 is preferred. Burne-Jones frequently recollected dates in error.
I think we must give the benefit of the doubt to Perseus, as Andromeda is verso and the Days of Creation [originally the drawing was given to both Days of Creation and Perseus] are earlier but there is little to separate the style of drawing between c. 1875 and c. 1882 when it comes to wings. I think from now on we should distrust some of the dates as Philip [B-J] has added them posthumously and why should EB-J date studies unless he was giving them away himself. Also Philip does occasionally make mistakes in identification as well but this makes it sometimes difficult for us as he was after all the artist's son! EB-J knew what he was doing and used the drawings as reference so why should he date and identify them? Obviously for Philip, if the drawings bore initials and dates they would be worth more and we know he had tastes beyond his purse! It would appear that B-J only signed drawings when: 1. He was presenting them to special friends 2. They were of special significance to him as the MZ examples show 3. If they were for exhibition [these EB-J sometimes misdated too] There will, of course be a few exceptions but EB-J is useful as a rule of thumb. The initials and inscriptions we know were made by J R Holliday, Fairfax Murray and Philip who were adding them to give authentication. (CFM was perhaps a little dodgy and Howell and Rosa Corda have to be taken into consideration). WW to PN
