Black and red chalk on red paper Two studies for a rejected figure seated at the foot of Morgan Le Fay. In the final painting she is playing a harp and is the only figure to look directly at the viewer. The studies show her holding a prop musical instrument which Burne-Jones had commissioned to be be made for The Lament of 1866, whihc he used frequently from then onwards. A photograph of this prop appears in Philip Burne-Jones's article in the 1900 edition of The Magazine of Art.
