The Orpheus and Eurydice story was to have been included in William Morris's The Earthly Paradise, but was eventually excluded. These studies were presumably made in preparation for an illustration, and when the story was not to be included the illustrative project was abandoned. The model for the male nude is the same as that in the painting of Day (1869-71).
