Stylistically the drawing dates from the early 1870s and compares to the figure in The Mystic Marriage (Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle) but is a direct view rather than from the side, which would make it a variant made before the large version in the Tate Gallery collections. The attitude of the head and the arms indicate that the figure was looking upwards and praying as in that version.
