Designed in 1877, the three Angels in the tracery quatrafoils for the three light window in the south choir aisle East window of the Regimental Chapel, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. Three cartoons were over-painted and made as separate saleable works and second versions were also painted. Current location of present work unknown
One of three pictures of Angels of which two versions were made, a small set in oils and a larger set, to which this picture belongs, in gouache. They were adapted from designs for glass in the tracery of the St Catherine window at Christ Church, Oxford (see no, 200 [in the 1975 Hayward catalogue]). One of the small Angels, dated 1881, is in Glasgow Art Gallery. Another from the larger set, an Angel playing a flageolet, is in the Holt Collection at Sudley, Liverpool. It is dated 1878 but this may refer to the fact that the Christ Church window was designed this year. Bell dates the larger Angels 1881 and implies that they were painted after the smaller set.
