According to Richard and Hilary Myers, Edward Burne Jones designed this tile, in addition to others in the Cinderella series, for an overmantel panel in 1862. The fairytale overmantels were originally made for the Hill, the Surrey home of Myles Birket Foster which was completed in 1863, see Richard and Hilary Myers, 'William Morris Tiles' (Shepton Beauchamp, Richard Dennis Publications, 1996), pp. 28-31. For a painted version of the tile, see R. and H. Myers, 'William Morris Tiles', p. 45, pl. 13c. For a colour illustration of the overmantel from the Hill, see R. and H. Myers, 'William Morris Tiles', p. 43, pl. 11b. For a later version of the Cinderella overmantel, see R. and H. Myers, 'William Morris Tiles', p. 31, fig. 58. See also R. and H. Myers, 'William Morris Tiles', p. 51, fig. 19c for another example of a misfired tile.
