Fairfax Murray suggested that this design was for embroidery. There exists a colour design (Sotheby's London 15/6/1982) of two identical figures that provides the possibility that this work may in fact be from the hand of William Morris or a collaboration for a decorative project. The Fitzwilliam account book for 1861 has the entry "2 figures for tapestry" for which Burne-Jones was paid £2. A sketchbook in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Cat no 91 D 37) contains a list of works under the date of 1861 "2 large figures for screen at the shop", this may have been embroidered or stained glass, but it most probably relates to this design.
