Mrs Patrick Campbell (9 February 1865 – 9 April 1940), born Beatrice Rose Stella Tanner and known informally as "Mrs Pat" A British stage actress, she achieved great success as Mélisande in Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas and Mélisande, touring the United States. (Also appeared in Pelléas and Mélisande :The Prince of Wales Theatre in 1898) For the 1898 production Mrs Pat commissioned Gabriel Fauret ( 1845 -1924) to composed the accompanying music. In the late 1890s Burne-Jones designed her costumes for Mélisande and this drawing would appear to be of her in costume. Philip Burne-Jones achieved notoriety after rejection by the actress after and affair resulting in him painting her as The Vampire in 1897 and exhibited it at the New Gallery.
