A very rare example of Burne-Jones drawing on the block, though a number of tracings by other hands exist, intended for copying on to woodblock. Illustrating their own books was a completely new venture and Burne-Jones and Morris were dissatisfied with the results when they tried to utilise professional engravers. Subsequently the project proved too difficult and time consuming, even though George Wardle, G F Campfield and Lucy Faulkner each made a trial, but Morris, realising that he could do as well, took over the project, but it was never completed.
