From a bound volume containing 86 studies for illustrations to 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' made to accompany the poem in William Morris''The Earthly Paradise'.Compositionally similar to the 1872-81 oil painting in Birmingham's collection, although this scene is set in a landscape within a walled garden. Psyche is draped on the far right, emerging from the garden door, holding hands with Cupid. To Cupid's right is Mercury, winged and fully robed with a winged helmet on his head, as Hebe approaches Psyche with the cup of immortal life. On the far left is Apollo, draped, playing a lyre and wearing a laurel crown, to his left is Jupiter wearing a crown , next to him is Juno, and in the back, Venus is seen, nude.
