The painting which is in itself a depressing view of the effect of love was moderated by the artist through its development and the present drawing of a demented figure was obviously too extreme a representation for Burne-Jones. 1876 would seem to have been a peak in the artist's jaundiced view and the figure in th final painting appears amused rather than suffering.
