Fitzwilliam work list 1867 Designed 12 subjects from Pygmalion This drawing, based upon the illustrations to the story in William Morris's Earthly Paradise, was made at an early stage in the preparation of the first series of four paintings of the story. It has subtle differences from the painting The Soul Attains of 1868; in this drawing, it shows Pygmalion looking up into the face of Galatea who appears to be resisting him and turns her face and shoulder gently away, which provides a subtle psychological difference from that in the painting where Galatea is more accepting of the situation. The relationship between the figures is a reversal of that found in Phyllis and Demophoon of c.1869.
