Fitzwilliam work list: 1875 ... made many studies for Perseus 1877 ... Worked on Perseus set - making two cartoons for the first pictures and beginning the oil pictures Charles Robert Whorwood Adeane CB JP (1863-1943) attended the sale of the remaining works of Sir Edward Burne-Jones at Christie's, Manson and Woods on Thursday June 5 1919 and purchased lot 177 which consisted off of two oil studies for the Perseus series: the study of a Head and a study of Adromeda 67" x 45". Judging by the dimensions this was a substantial purchase at £110, the family were aware of the final set which their friend Sir Arthur Balfour (1848-1930) had commissioned and owned at this date. The Wyndham family and the Balfours were members of The Souls and had close ties. Charles Robert's son was Colonel Sir Robert Philip Wyndham Adeane (1905-1979), his purchase of this drawing therefore has a relevance to the family collection. The drawing from a studio model (most likely to have been Antonia Caiva) illustrates Burne-Jones habit of carefully choosing body models and placing the faces of close friends upon them for the finished painting. Although the studio model here has a beautiful face it is not that of the final version. The extraordinarily fine pencil drawing technique, characteristic of this period, reached its zenith with the studies for The Golden Stairs. The paper size indicates that this drawing was once part of a sketch book and it is unknown if it was detached during Burne-Jones's lifetime or later.
