Both this design and the one to the left are for windows in the south gallery transept of Coats Parish Church, Coatsbridge, Lanarkshire, executed in 1876. Were it not for documentary evidence in the artist's account book, one might be excused for thinking that some assistant had a hand in these works, so feeble is the draughtsmanship, described by Sewter as 'hesitant, tired and unsure'. However, the evidence is clear that the artist himself was solely responsible for them, although he was certainly not happy with the results.Burne-Jones's observations and comments in his account book should not always be taken seriously. Those made with reference to these two designs and the others for Coatbridge are particularly forthright - 'Now we come to certain disgraceful transactions.....4 more disgraceful designs of events in the careers of Paul, Peter, James & Andrew - I do admit that these are the worst things I ever did in my whole life, and the question arises how I shall compensate myself for the shame I shall experience as often as I think of these four panels - would it not be a good jest and promote laughter rather than shame at the recollection of them if I charged a good handsome price for them, far beyond their real or marketable value. - let us see. Coats 4 panels, 4 most damned bad cartoons £8 ea. £32. 3 perfectly filthy & indescribably execrable apostles in small. Coats James, Jude, Paul £3 ea. These little failures and signs of mental fatigue or overtasked invention have their biographical value; but meantime till they assert their place in history I want £9 for them. £9.'
