This cartoon is for the left hand light in the nave west window of the Abbey Church of St. Mary the Virgin at Margam, Glamorgan, and, like its companion, was not reused in Burne Jones's lifetime. Both windows are described by Charles Sewter, in his monumental book on the Morris firm's stained glass, as being 'of superb quality, full of confidence, and stated with striking economy'. There is some confusion as to the identity of the saint in the window; Burne-Jones himself called him Bernard, although the cartoon is inscribed 'St Barnard', but the window identifies him as St. Barnabas and H.C. Marillier, the last managing director of Morris & Company, identified him as St. Benedict. All this is an indication of how interchangable Burne-Jones's large figure designs often were.
