Exodus Chapter 3 Verse 2 "and the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed" Burne-Jones designed a window of this subject in 1892, installed in St Brycedale, Kirkcaldy. In this drawing the lines are similar to those favoured by the continental Art Nouveau movement, but in fact Burne-Jones had been designing flames in this manner from 1870, they appear in the west window of All Saints Church, Middleton Cheney, consuming Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego, and in 1874 when he designed The Destruction of Sodom panel (Lot and his Daughters) for the west window in Calcutta Cathedral. The designs for Middleton Cheney were repeated as oil versions, two of which are now in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery - Azarias and Ananias.
