An extraordinarily economic design which demonstrates Burne-Jones's affinity with the coming continental movements of Symbolism and Surrealism. His knowledge of Japanese woodcuts has allowed him to severely crop the bird's head. Psychologically the drawing is extremely advanced for its day and reflects the way in which the mind can conceive of the world in fragmentary images as opposed to the whole. Possibly also inspired by his recent researches into heraldry.
