This is Burne-Jones in his late phase. The exhibited works showed an economy of design, the descriptive element reduced to a minimum but in the Secret book of Designs, not for public consumption, he went further to the edge of abstraction. Had Burne-Jones been active for another ten years he would have had more in common with the Symbolist movement and the post Impressionists and his depression at his decline in popularity amongst the avant-garde audience of the 1890s would perhaps have been unfounded.
