Although the gaze is different from that of the Angel in the final painting, Julia Cartwright visited Burne-Jones in the preparation of the article, therefore the description of the painting as being for The Annunciation must be accurate, therefore this study belongs to an earlier conception in which the Angel was situated almost on the same level as the Virgin as seen in the sketch held in the Fitzwilliam museum from a sketchbook (Fitzwilliam PDP, 1085.f.16)
