A study for the sixth painting in the series of seven canvases illustrating 'The Story of St George' for the dining room of the artist Myles Birket Foster, at Witley, Surrey. One of fifteen studies for this subject in Birmingham's collection. The lower part of this figure is similar to the position of St George's legs in the final version, in which however the dragon is beneath him and he bends to thrust the sword down its throat. Here the shield is round, while in the final version it is larger and an irregular shape. The final painting is now in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. A gouache version, omitting the Princess, is owned by William Morris Museum, Walthamstow.
