A study for the sixth painting in the series of seven canvases illustrating 'The Story of St George' for the dining room of the artist Myles Birket Foster, at Witley, Surrey. One of fifteen studies for this subject in Birmingham's collection. The figure is more in profile than in the final version, and his action of striking over and in front of him differs from his position in the oil painting and the related gouache. The shield is now taller, and somewhat irregular than in other chalk studies. The final painting is now in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. The gouache version, omitting the Princess, is owned by William Morris Museum, Walthamstow.
