Preliminary compositional sketch of the fifth subject of the Legend of St George Series, Here one of the attendants kneels at the foot of the Princess as if in supplication, in the final version they abandon her to her fate. The drawing on the reverse is of one of the slumbering knights caught up in the briars for the tile design "The Prince Enters the Briar Thicket" of c.1864. The fact that the scene from the St George Series is linked to the Briar Rose tiles is significant in that one might assume that the series at first inspired the oil paintings of the story of St George, or that the story of St George was initially considered for a set of tiles.
