A sketch for the third painting in the series of seven canvases illustrating 'The Story of St George' for the dining room of the artist Myles Birket Foster, at Witley, Surrey. This scene refers to the Princess drawing the fatal lot labelled 'Moritura' (She who shall die). In the final painting, the Princess faces left and reaches for the fatal slip of paper as if about to faint. She grasps the hand of an attendant in the painting, whereas here she stands calmly, facing right. The 1866 oil painting is in the collection of Hanover College, Indiana.
