This is a design for stained glass for the Church of St John the Evangelist, Torquay, Devon (1865). St John stands on the left, turned slightly to the right, and holding in his right hand a chalice, from which issues a serpent. On the right stands St Peter, full-face, looking down at a book, which he holds in both hands. This cartoon also appears in the Morris & Co Windows Book, 1940P604.2, as number 605.
The 1939 Catalogue of Drawings states that they were made in 1865 for a window at Liverpool, and used again at Meole Brace about 1870 ; but no such window exists at Liverpool; some of the designs were indeed used again at Meole Brace, but the whole series of 6 drawings are studies for the Torquay window.
