This is a design for a stained glass window executed by Morris and Co for the Church of John the Evangelist, Torquay, Devon (1865). Bill Waters has identified the Birmingham drawing as a preparatory sketch for the transfer drawing now in a Private Collection (sold at Bonhams, Knightsbridge in 1986), which was squared up and finished. This cartoon also appears in the Morris & Co Windows Book, 1940P604.5, as number 150a.
The 1939 Catalogue of Drawings states that they were made in 1865 for a window at Liverpool, and used again at Meole Brace about 1870 ; but no such window exists at Liverpool; some of the designs were indeed used again at Meole Brace, but the whole series of 6 drawings are studies for the Torquay window.
