This is a prepatory study, with no changes, for 'The Evening Star' or 'Stella Vespertina'. The finished version was executed in 1879, in black and blue chalk, and is now in the possession of Torre Abbey in Torquay. It was a design for stained glass commissioned by Angus Holden for his house in Yorkshire. It should be noted that this version differs radically from the previous paintings of the 'Evening Star' of 1870 (Private Collection, UK) and 1872 (Collection of Lord Lloyd-Webber).
