Burne-Jones contributed two designs for execution by the Royal School of Art Needlework (founded in 1872 by Princess Christina of Schlesweig-Holstein), this design and its complement, 'Music/Musica'. Each design was worked in outline with brown crewel on linen, and they were so popular that a number of copies were executed (one dating from 1880 is currently in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne). A large scale cartoon of 'Poesis', probably worked up by Charles Fairfax Murray, is in the Walsall Art Gallery. He also probably worked up that of 'Musica' as well, the cartoon now in the Courtauld Institute of Art.
