Study for the first of two oil versions executed by Burne-Jones of 'The Mirror of Venus', dating from 1867-77. The second version dates from 1870-76, and is now in the collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal. A nude study of the entire composition, once in the possession of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle and the FORBES Magazine Collection, is now in private hands, and dates from 1868. There are also several studies of the attendants in both the Fitzwilliam and Ashmolean Museums.This study is for the attendant to Venus' immediate left, although the position of the head has changed in the final version.
