Preliminary ideas for drapery for the Virgin Mary and the hands of the Angel Gabriel for The Annunciation of 1879, now held in the Lady Lever Art Gallery. These studies are part of a series, some of which are now held in the Bradford City Art Gallery collections, and were made in preparation for the complicated draperies the artist originally intended for both the Virgin and the Ange,l but were retained only for Gabriel and replaced with simpler attire for the Virgin Mary. The hands of Gabriel ultimately were placed in salutation, but went through a number of different positions during the composition's evolution.
