This work was originally identified by Burne Jones himself to be a study for the Masque of Cupid. However it has since been discovered that Burne Jones occasionally miss-attributed his works and this is in fact a sketch from an unfinished painting of Tristram and Iseult based on Sir Thomas Malory’s Arthurian legend. In this beautiful sketch Burne-Jones has captured the beauty of Le Belle Iseult, who in the painting is rushing into the woods, clutching a note from her maid.
Study in pencil of a Young Girl's Head and neck; rather fuller than three-quarter face; head slightly turned, and eyes looking, to the left. Signed "E.B.J."
