This study suggests that at one time the artist intended the far right-hand watcher to be wearing a light coloured cloak; although the final version shows her wearing a dark blue cloak over an even darker dress. One must also bear in mind Philip Burne-Jones’s account that the painting was not fully complete and that it was his father’s “intention to glaze over later on, with appropriate shades of colouring.” It is therefore possible that this figure was to have additions of a lighter cloak. This drawing is an exact copy in a brown wash of a red chalk drawing on a similar coloured paper by Burne-Jones. It wa smade by an assistant with highlights in white added by Burne-Jones, to capture the effect of light on the draperies and colours were added to make the drawing more commercial.
