This hitherto unrecorded watercolour dates from the 1880s and is one of a number of small works in this medium that Burne-Jones made at the time. It seems to be unrelated to any of his other works, although he did design a figure of Virgil for stained glass using a different pose, in 1872. The picture was given by Georgiana Burne-Jones to J W Mackail
In original frame, designed by the artist. From the collection of Georgiana Burne-Jones, the artist's widow, who presented it (perhaps as an anniversary present) to her son-in-law, J. W. Mackail, the classicist and biographer of William Morris. Mackail later gave the drawing to Dorothy Brook.
