The present oil study demonstrates the process used in the studio in the elaboration of a final work. It has the appearance of not having been taken from life, but is part of the distillation of an image from nature being converted into a work of art. this painting shows how Burne-Jones incorporated the use of highly accomplished assistants as a means of producing a large body of work, it would have been copied by an assistant from a highly detailed drawing made from the model and then touched in and refined by the Master in the transition from life study into his final visionary in oil.
