Taken from the central portion of the abandoned illustration to Chaucer's Parlement of Foules. The Technique of gold on black paper was to aid the production of a repousse silver panel by Robert Catterson-Smith who was working on the preparation of the illustration for the Kelmscott Chaucer. That the whole illustration was produced in gold on purple paper implies that it was their intetion to produce the whole design on one panel, however possibly through discussion with Catterson-Smith the idea was simplified down into two simpler designs.
