A complex illustration which contains many elements, the beginning of the Chapel's decay, as indicated by the briars growing through the walls, the Angel forbidding Sir Lancelot's entrance, his horse tethered to a tree and the Knight, himself sleeping confuses the essence of the moment depicted. Compared with the drawing over the page it would appear that Burne-Jones appreciated this and decided upon a simpler more psychologically telling design, both for the tapestry and the subsequent painting.
