A highly formalized design based upon medieval illuminated manuscript conventions, in which the horse is deliberately drawn adopting an impossible position. A page in the sketchbook Acc. no 1952P6. 84 (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) features drawings taken from a medieval source of a knight on horseback, which was one of the sources for this illustration. The drawing relates to the top row of narrative caved panels on the canopy of the catafalque, showing knights setting out on their quest for the holy Grail, in The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon.
