The figure of Medea on a chariot drawn by serpents, she holds a cup and a flaming torch as she is described in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Medea appears frequently in the list of illustrations the artist was to make for William' Morris's The Life and Death of Jason, all of which were abandoned, this drawing may have been a melancholy reference to the un-executed series.
