Fitzwilliam work list 1871 ... designed the Tristram and Yseult The figures left to right are King Mark, Alisader le Orphelin, la Belle Yseult carrying a letter, Dame Brangaine, Tristram kissing Yseult, leaning in the fountain Sir Palomides. Burne-Jones has adopted the medieval convention of simultaneously representing multiple episodes in the story. The format is similar to that he used in the Pilgrim entering the Garden of Vices in the design for the Rounton Grange embroideries. The sensuality of the naked embrace of the main protagonists is heightened by it's being contrasted with clothed figures and reflect Burne-Jones's contemporary mental state. This design more that any other gives an insight into his feelings regarding his on-going affair.
